Welcome to Brian Mairs Consulting
Our Story

Consultants used to get a bad reputation - tell somebody you were a "consultant" was just another way of saying "out of work".
In early 1997, Brian was offered an opportunity with "The Mining Company", (later About.com) one of the few Internet information resources (Dot.Coms) to eventually survive the techno-crash of 2001.

During this period of time, we also contracted to a pilot project using qualified counsellors to provide employment counselling to people with disabilities across Canada (Workink). Brian Mairs Consulting provided both technical and procedural training for counsellors on-line, assisted with development of a web presence, and wrote numerous articles to assist employers and employees who are disabled.

Brian has been called upon to advocate for people who have a dispute with the BC provincial government, and to serve in the capacity as tribunal nominees and as a Chair in settling disputed between individuals and the BC Ministry of Human Resources.

Image As community-based advocates, we continue to assist people who are living on the edge of society due to racial prejudice, economic disadvantages, illness, and a variety of social phobias. In addition to the social work, Brian provides Internet design and personal counselling services, working towards positive solutions for those who are willing to help themselves.

Our latest venture involves Management on Demand, where we will contract out to small organisation and firms to undertake temporary or one-off tasks that Executive Management teams have difficulty fitting into their schedule. This includes:

  • Responding to government "Request for Proposals" for Social Service agencies
  • Grant Writing
  • Assisting management team with union negotiations
  • Recruiting, selection, background checks and recommendations for new staff
  • Development of corporate paper tools
  • Developing Policies and Procedures Document
  • Human Resource Management (Hiring, Layoff, Dismissal of staff)
  • Initial development and ongoing maintenance of a web presence
  • Writing position papers
  • Developing a business model for an Internet Based Business

  • Completed Community Based Research
  • Canadian Aboriginal Marginalization in Health and Employment
  • Over Representation of Visible Minorities in Canadian Prisons and Jails
  • Institutionalized Racism in Canada
  • Crystal Methamphetamine Use in Okanagan Aboriginal Populations
We are currently involved in researching green technologies for independent development of power using a combination of solar, inversion conductors, and battery sources, in an effort to reduce our dependence on coal fired or hydro generated electrical power.

We are also supporting independent study of emerging astrophysics, specifically in the field of electromagnetism and galaxy creation, to further understand the field of geophysics and planetary evolution. This study is expected to continue through 2014.

Responding to RFPs
Understanding the complexity of the continuing search for funding not-for-profits, balanced against the need for executive teams to take the necessary time to run their agencies as businesses has prompted us to provide organisations with a solution to the potential problem of missing deadlines for responding to proposal calls and grant applications.

As we know, it can take 40 hours or more to respond to a proposal call from awareness to delivery, which can play havoc with prescheduled meetings and presentations of equal but different importance.

Our solution is to provide a proposal writing service on a contract basis, with a non-refundable fee to cover the costs of preparing the documentation against a commission based on the success of the final award. This way, the proposal gets written for less than half the cost of executive staff, and the full fee is contingent on success. Moreover, the fee can be paid out on a quarterly basis when the agency actually gets the funds to make the program as viable as possible.

Ad Hoc Human Resources
We have over twenty years experience in management or supervisory positions responsible for recruitment, selection, background checks and recommendations for new staff in a variety of industries including services to people with multiple challenges, health care, consumer finance, and corporate security.

We will work with your management team to take the pressure off the acute human resource function of ensuring replacement or new staff is recruited, screened and recommendations made for interviews. If required, we will sit on the hiring panel to provide an unbiased opinion to the process.
